The concrete floor in your basement can be something that you want to cover up and, if this is the case, you can consider epoxy flooring as a way to make your basement floor look great and be protected from any damage. Although a floor with an epoxy coat is not applicable to all basement floors, it has actually worked well with mine. The space in our basement is designed as play room for our kids. That’s why it is mostly used during rainy days. Since I treated the floor with coating, the play area becomes a great playground because they can do almost anything and the feeling of dampness is also removed.
An epoxy floor coating is actually a mixture of two liquids that form a very tough solid surface. These two chemical compounds are known as resin and hardener. If you have encountered doing any fiberglass projects, these two compounds are already familiar to you because these are the very same materials used for fiberglass construction. The difference between the two is that a fiberglass is strengthened by using a mesh cloth while the epoxy coating gets its strength from the concrete underneath it.
In applying a coating, you should also not forget the application of anti-slip materials before the coating completely solidifies. A cured epoxy coat can be very hard but smooth and thus it can be slippery if juice or water is spilled on it. A sand or color chips can be used for this purpose. The sand may be too gritty for your preference while color chips can bring more life to the floor. You can opt to choose color chips that complement the base material or something that contrasts the color. Either of the two can make your floor have a better appearance than its dull grey color from the concrete aside from the fact that it resolves the slicking issues.
Once you have decided to make use of an epoxy application to your floor, be sure that the windows are secured enough to be kept open for some days since the fumes of the coating can be very harsh. After it cures, the basement floor is much safer to walk on and it gives life too.
