Properties of Oak flooring

Engineered Oak flooring is 100% natural wood. The milled, grooved planks are normally the same dimension as solid hardwood planks are normally the same dimension as solid hardwood planks.  Not all of the Oak flooring is the same, so buyers will have a variety of options when considering length, thickness and width. There is also the species of the wood to consider.  Red oak as its name applies is reddish in color while there is more of a brown tone to white oak.

Grades of Oak

Engineered Oak flooring comes in three different grades.  The degree of perfection is determined by the number of knots and color variance of the wood.  A “clear” grade is the highest available. While it may still have some imperfections they are few. A medium grade to consider is known as “select.”  With select grade there can be noticeable color variances and imperfections.  The grade with the most natural look and most imperfections is also the lowest grade available. “Common” grade may have the most flaws however, for those looking for a very natural appearance; it may be the right choice.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Wood plank flooring has the advantage of sectional stability. Engineered unfinished oak flooring is a benefit when there is a sub-floor heating application. It tends not to swell or contract. While it is not as affected by low humidity, it can be affected by excess moisture so is usually not recommended for bathrooms.

Placement and Pricing

There are a few options as to how you might want your oak planks installed.  They sections can be glued into place, stapled or laid down as a floating floor. As with any home project hiring an expert to install the flooring is important. It is also crucial to consider room conditions as special preparation may be required if a room tends to be too humid.  Cost varies and research for the most affordable unfinished oak flooring in your area may be required. The flooring is sold per square inch so room dimensions should be known before making any purchase.
